DAO NGOC ANH - INITIATIVE IS THE “KEY” TO LEARNING ENGLISH

Dao Ngoc Anh, a 13-year-old girl, is currently one of the excellent students with outstanding achievements at Ocean Edu Tu Son, Bac Ninh. Ngoc Anh’s parents let her study this foreign language since a young age, hence, she had a solid foundation to develop her English skills and gain lots of high achievements. In the interview with Ocean Edu about the learning process, she shared:

"At a young age, I had a passion for English. So my mom bought me lots of good stories and funny cartoons in English. Not only that, but she also let me study at Ocean Edu International English Center to improve my skills since I was 6 years old. So far, I have been studying English for more than 5 years and I realize that it has given me a lot of advantages in approaching the world".

Each person has different ways of learning English, but for me, to learn English, we need to focus on all four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Due to each skill has the necessary element to supplement all 3 remaining skills. We must hear well to speak well. We must master vocabulary and grammar before reading and writing. Besides, we need to be creative in learning English. Textbooks at schools and centres are just basic steps, so we must be proactive in looking up more diverse resources. We can also learn English by watching movies, listening to music or reading books in English. In summary, learning English is an intensive process, but it will become more effortless if we can find suitable and effective learning ways”.

Ngoc Anh also revealed with everyone the strategies to practice 4 English skills:

• Listening skills: Listen as much as possible: listen to the radio, listen to music, watch movies, .. If you are not familiar with it, listen with subtitles in Vietnamese first 1, 2 times, then listen to the song or movie again in the non-Vietnamese version and check how many parts you are able to remember and understand.
• Speaking skills: Firstly, you should correct pronunciation. After that, do not hesitate to speak, interact with foreigners and practise with them every day. 
• Reading skills: Study vocabulary selectively, common words, phrases and idioms. Then you will know how to use words in different contexts. Cultivating lexical resource supports not only reading but also 03 remaining skills.
• Writing Skills: Focus on grammar. To improve grammar, you should go through each lesson: vocabulary, sentences, conversation practice. 

With the initiative in learning and daily efforts to practice English, despite her young age, Ngoc Anh was able to communicate fluently in English, achieving various high achievements in English competitions for many consecutive years.
